Use these 3 DSP resources to market your music
Use these little known resources.
Hi,
While I normally send out newsletters on Thursdays, with tomorrow being Thanksgiving I wanted to get this out today. Side note - with Thanksgiving upon us, are we officially at the time of the year where every email starts off with “Happy Holidays”?
Where did this year go? sigh
This newsletter highlights:
3 DSP resources to help market your music
Let’s dive in ⬇️
Okay Mike…enough with the music industry jargon, what exactly is a DSP?
DSP stands for Digital Service Provider - some folks also refer to the acronym as Digital Streaming Platform. It’s essentially an acronym for streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, etc.
Each platform has their own ecosystem, nuance, and best practices.
While some best practices are more widely known than others, many platforms also provide their own list of resources but because they don’t go super hard promoting them, they are in many cases overlooked.
Let’s dive into a few that might be helpful with your rollouts.
1) Apple Music Toolbox
Apple Music’s Marketing Toolbox offers many resources to help promote released music.
After landing on the main homepage, you’ll see a search bar that allows you to search a number of keywords including:
•Artist name
•Playlist title
•Song title
•Album title
1) Playlist Search - Let's say one of your songs gets added to an Apple Music playlist and you're excited to share the placement with your fans on socials. You can use the toolbox to search for a specific playlist download the high res cover artwork among other resources.
2) Song search - Now let’s say you’re looking for resources to market a specific song & you search the name of that song in the toolbar…Apple will provide you a bunch of resources, including a link to that song as well as as a short link.
3) QR Code - The toolbox also gives you the ability to generate QR codes that lead directly back to songs, albums, artist profiles, & more on Apple Music. You can use these codes on marketing materials like posters, flyers, graphics, etc to make it easy for people to discover.
4) Tweet Preview - If you scroll down to the bottom of a song's page, you’ll see the option to tweet a 30 second preview of that song. Apple Music helps generate a link that when tweeted, has an embedded audio player that plays the song directly within the tweet.
This becomes a powerful tool, giving people the ability to listen to your song directly on Twitter, without having to click away from the platform.
5) Preview Player - Apple also provides the embed code to display a preview player of music.
For ex: if you wanted to embed an album preview player on a Wordpress website - you could copy the piece of code, embed it on Wordpress, and allow fans to listen directly from that page.

2) YouTube for Artists
Similiar to Apple Music for Artists and Spotify for Artists, YouTube has its own self titled destination called YouTube for Artists.
The website serves as a hub for YouTube news, charts, new features, and resources.
The resources tab is a little under the radar but filled with gems - for example, information on best practices for audience engagement, channel growth, & more.
Some of the information is surface level (and maybe even obvious) but it never hurts to have reassurance directly from the source.

3) Spotify for Artists Blog
Similiar to the above resources, Spotify for Artists blog offers a wealth of resources, checklists, and free game. It goes in-depth on release checklist best practices (for example Clips, Canvas, etc) as well as new features and news.
Even if you’re familiar with the platform, it can still be helpful to explore these resources every few months to stay up to date on new developments.

Thanks for reading, until next time and happy Thanksgiving.
